The Difference

Why do we care about sustainability in down material?

Traditional feather down, and most synthetic downs, raise major ethical and environmental concerns for the conscious consumer. Up until recently, it was a case of “ignorance is bliss” for consumers – but thankfully, Impla™ and the PLA production process offer a better solution.

Down VS. Synthetic Down VS. Impla™

A rise in consumer preference toward luxury and comfort is likely to increase demand for down in purchased goods. However, now more than ever, socially conscious consumerism is giving rise to sustainable down and feather popularity.

What is the difference between down vs. synthetic vs. Impla™?

Fowl
Down

Down is harvested from geese through a practice called “live-plucking.” That is when the feathers of a goose, and the undercoating of geese and ducks, are pulled off their skin while they are still alive. This is an incredibly painful process for the animals and leaves them stunned and terrified, with broken wings and legs. This practice often happens overseas, where regulations against such mistreatment aren’t as stringent as in the US.

Synthetic
Down

Synthetic down alternative, while more humane, is a poor choice for the environment.

During the synthetic down manufacturing process, materials have a negative environmental impact due to most synthetics being petroleum based.

This increases the world’s overall carbon footprint.

Impla™ Down Substitute

Impla™ is the down alternative that simply makes sense.

Not only is it ethical in terms of animal treatment, it also leaves behind almost zero carbon footprint. Impla™ is made of Polylactic Acid (PLA) pellets and fibers.

Products made from PLA are 100% environmentally friendly, low carbon emission, and a part of a conscious sustainable life cycle.
